What are veneers?
Veneers are tooth-colored, thin shells that are placed in front of your teeth. They are recommended when there is unwanted spacing between your teeth, or if you have discolored teeth that are otherwise healthy. Veneers can cover these discolored teeth. They can also be used if you have a tooth that's pushed in and you want to align it with the rest of your teeth without getting braces.
What's the difference between veneers and crowns?
Veneers only cover the front of your teeth and are mainly for cosmetic purposes. They do not protect or strengthen the tooth. A crown, on the other hand, covers the whole tooth and is usually used for teeth that are broken down or have too much decay. Crowns are often used for teeth that have had a root canal done. The crown is more likely to protect your teeth.
What is the process of placing veneers?
The process to do the veneer first involves preparing the tooth. Sometimes, little parts of the tooth have to be removed, but most of the time, no-prep veneers are done, where the tooth is not touched at all. An impression of that tooth is taken and sent to the lab for them to fabricate the thin shells. Once they come back to us, we bond them to your teeth, making sure they fit well and look natural. We roughen the tooth surface with a chemical called etch, place the bonding agent on the tooth and the veneer, and then use a light curing material to make it hard. We clean the excess cement and then you're good to go.
Will veneers match my other teeth?
Yes, the bonding and the veneers should be able to match your other teeth. A clear or translucent cement is used so that it will not change the shade of the veneers once they are cemented.
What are the differences between composite and porcelain veneers?
Composite veneers are made from the same materials that are used when doing fillings on your teeth. The only drawback with composite is that it picks up stain. Porcelain veneers, which are the ones used when making your crown, maintain the same shade throughout the years.
How should I care for my veneers?
To care for your veneers, you should continue to brush and floss regularly. It's recommended that if you have veneers, you should use a mouth guard at night, especially if you grind your teeth. Also, avoid biting into crunchy or hard substances.
How much do veneers cost?
The cost of veneers depends on the type you're getting. The best thing to do is to book a complimentary consultation so that the type of veneer you need can be evaluated.
